Not just life imprisonment, mind you. I mean total humiliation. You kill someone because you hate that someone? Or you’re killing innocent people who do you no harm for kicks? Or you kill because you have a phobia of certain groups of people? Or worse, you did a rape-slay?

I disagree with you here. Take away their liberty, lock them up, try to rehabilitate. If it works, great. If not, keep them in.

The “Try to Rehabilitate” I will certainly get behind. Dunno how deep we should lock ’em up. How about Escape Plan -style?

Eh, just your standard maximum security prison. Worse comes to worse, keep them in solitary (sometimes for their own safety, sometimes to prevent any influences on other prisoners).

Good enough, then.

Jail sentences could be shorter if they just put people in solitary for their entire stay. That would be a much more sincere punishment for most people.

Ehhhh... we already tried that. It was called the Pennsylvania system, and worked to inspire penance by having people in solitary and not communicating with one another, only with guards or visitors. Hell, they couldn’t even look at each other. It was rather expensive, and also had this little side effect of driving people crazy (turns out that we’re social creatures, and being in solitary for long periods of time is a bad idea). So yeah, not a good idea.

Maybe they shouldn’t have killed someone then...
